Villa Retreat at The Boulders Resort

The Boulders Resort & Golden Door Spa in Carefree, Ariz., just north of Scottsdale, is completing a renovation on its largest guest accommodations this fall. The privately owned one-, two- and three-bedroom villas, including some well-worn homes placed into the resort rental pool by owners, have suffered from uneven quality.

Last summer, staying at one three-bedroom villa meant enduring an interior with carpeted floors, dated bathrooms and a kitchen that screamed 1987. While the residence was spacious and comfortable enough to accommodate six guests, the villa hardly reflected the refined southwestern aesthetic prevalent throughout the rest of the resort. Villas are now being revamped with stone floors, updated stainless steel appliances, soaking tubs in the master bathroom and new furnishings. Villas which range in size from 1,800 to 3,000 square feet, also have fireplaces and outdoor living areas. The Boulders is no longer booking guests in any villas that have not been renovated. The resort also just rolled out its Villa Retreat, two homes with a total of 5,000 square feet of living space.

There are currently 38 renovated villas, and the resort will boost that total to 59 by the end of November. Rates for the villas range from $699 to $1,499 a night this fall, and jump up by $100 to $250 a night in late December through the winter high season.
